The Unexpected Sign you’re on the verge of a fitness breakthrough
Having momentary thoughts of resistance or frustration with your fitness journey?
It might feel counter-intuitive however it could be time to celebrate - as if this happens while you’re being consistent, this is often a strong indicator that you’re on the brink of a fitness breakthrough!
When Resistance or Boredom Strikes: Why That's a Very Good Sign for Your Fitness Journey
We all experience and crave those moments in training when we feel energised, powerful and totally in the zone. But what about the times when boredom, or even a strange sense of resistance creeps in?
It might be tempting to interpret these feelings as signs that we're doing something wrong, or what we’re doing is not working, and that we should back off or quit. Realistically, that’s what most of us do when we get to this point (which kind of makes sense right)? But what if you knew that from research (and my own personal experiences with fitness transformation), that these are the exact moments when you should be celebrating because your body and mind are likely on the brink of a breakthrough.
It might sound counter-intuitive, but experiencing internal resistance or boredom during your fitness journey can be a fantastic sign (and possibly the most important sign - as long as it’s not all of the time).
Think of it this way: your body and mind are comfortable with the status quo. They've adapted to your current level of activity and fitness. So, when you start pushing up against those boundaries, shaking things up, and challenging yourself through participating in small group training, or improving your nutrition or sleep, it's natural for your internal systems to put up a fight (even through that fight is working against you).
What Does This Mean for You?
When you encounter, internal resistance, boredom, or a sudden urge to skip your small group training sessions, or say “f#@* it” and start to eat a lot of ultra processed foods, it is often the sign that you're on the verge of very positive health change. Your body is struggling to adjust to the new demands you're placing on it and so it’s sending you signals that it knows will most likely make you want to quit.
So instead of viewing these feelings as setbacks, consider them a really valuable ‘aha’ moment - i.e. a really good indicator of progress and that you’re on the verge of a breakthrough. These are the moments that we’re actively searching for! You're now pushing up against your usual limits, your body is being forced to adapt, it’s fighting the change (often hard). So keep pushing past this point (grit your teeth and white knuckle it temporarily if you have to) because all of your dream outcomes are often just past this moment.
How to Navigate the Resistance and Boredom:
Acknowledge and Accept: Recognize these feelings for what they are - signs of change, not failure.
Keep Going: The key to overcoming an ‘extinction burst’ is consistency. Keep showing up to your group training sessions, even when you don't feel like it.
Focus on the Many Positives: Remind yourself of the benefits of your training program - looking good, feeling good, increased strength, better energy levels, improved mood, and so on.
Trust the Process: Understand that a major health transformation takes a little bit of time. Be patient with yourself and trust that your efforts will truly pay off.
Seek Support: Lean on your fellow small group training participants and your Coach for encouragement. Share your experiences and know that you're not alone (we’re all going through the same process at different times and types of personal growth).
The Takeaway
The next time you feel that wave of resistance or boredom wash over you during your fitness journey, don't worry and most importantly, don’t quit. From experience, it is likely one of the very best signals that you're about to level up.
Embrace the challenge, push through the discomfort safely, and you'll emerge stronger, fitter, happier and more resilient than ever before. Your body is now at a peak in your transformation, and it's working hard to adapt to the new, healthier you.
